Camera Trick for Video

I will use this camera trick to cut between when the girl leaves the hospital and goes to the field in reality. This will cut out filming in a hospital corridor as this would be hard to do if my actress is in a hospital gown.

Evidence of Photography

An Interview with my Artist

ADDAL

"I think that after the last four years of EDM's (Electronic Dance Music) hegemony, people's ears are simply tired! This is what happened to me and is the reason why I went back doing something more melodic and passionate; I felt that I needed to get back to real emotions because music is made of this. That's why I call my kind of music EMOTIONAL, and I think that the secret is only that people are feeling the same emotions that led me to make these tracks. It's something that starts from love and not from business, and I think that makes the difference."

Video Diary 2

Hi, since my last video diary,  have gotten replies from my artist's audience and posted them on my blog. I have also done research on artist's websites and artist's Digipak's, these can also be found on my blog. I hope to do more work on my artist's website.

Lesson Tuesday 11th November

Virtual Choir:

1. Prosumers (Producers + consumers)
2. Location (keep us separate, global community, connect and collaborate)
Ideology (your idea rather than the medias)
3. Relatable - people coming together
4. Specific subculture - people who we're willing to get involved

Media:

1. Traditional
2. Online

Marxism:

- The police/ government are there to protect the 1% tht don't question anything
- At school we're taught to conform, wear uniform, learn for exams etc.
- It's the norm to go on and follow the rules even though you'll still feel miserable.

What would Marx say these rules benefit?

- The 1% of people that have all the money and power
- They sell a lifestyle, an idea that cosmetic surgery, fame, fortune etc.
- Makes you realise how ordinary life is
- Marx wants people to realise why people are starving when there's enough money to feed the world - because they keep their money, we think this is normal and we aspire to be rich.
- Marxist view allows people to see that voting will never change.

In our thriller we have challenged the idea of hero Vs villain, because both characters, the killer and the computer hacker, commit crime acts. Also, we challenge the idea that the government is there to protect society because the government is behind the killing of the computer hacker, they are trying to keep the information on the USB stick a secret. Therefore, I am incorporating the idea of conspiracy. However, we are normalising the idea that killers are bad, and the computer hacker we have sympathy for. We reinforced the idea that guns are powerful, and make you more masculine.

The fact that we don't include any female characters in our thriller could be conforming to stereotypes of women as fragile and feminine, so they don't become an action hero.

Consumerism:

- The idea that everything costs money
- Identity has a price tag, not natural

Power:

- The idea of Us Vs Them.

Russell Brand Video #GuardianLive:

- If you want to be happy to have fame, fortune, attention etc. yet salvation did not come.

- Culturally trying to solve it by consuming it. Smothering alienation in money. They don't want to be marginalised.

- If we live in an environment that stimulating selfishness we're in a constant state of desire. The selfish nature rises but we should be kind to each other.

- You won't make yourself happy with materialistic things.

- That people that say that the system works means the systems works for them.

- If he sold his book for free it would make it alright but everything costs, consumerism.

Music Video Marking

1st Video - Level 3 (Kesha - Hungover) C GRADE

Genre - pop
Lighting - 'bright light'
Effects - reflection,
Style + Image (adj) - literal

Brand Identity - The flowers on the digipak don't go together with the emo vibe.

Main: 25
Ancillary: 8
Overall: 33

The focus is on her in both the music video and digipak. The flower tattoo is featured in both texts - it is a motif. The colour black is common in both texts. The theme of femininity is seen throughout the texts. However the colours do not match and the texts are not the same throughout the digipak.

2nd Video - Level 2 (Indicates - Doors Are Secure) D GRADE

Genre - indie rock
Lighting - dark
Effects - handheld camera
Style + Image (adj) - dull, working class, edgy.

Brand Identity - The Digipak has a more sexual vibe, however the edgy looks match the video.

Main: 20
Ancillary: 6
Overall: 26

The focus is on the boys in the video, whereas there isn't an actual focus on the Digipak, just a couple kissing. The lip-syncing is bad and the camera is shaky. The digipak matches the dark scheme f the video, it's edgy.

Weather Check

I have compiled a list of information that shows the location and date i will be filming my music video and where. This shows that I have looked at what the weather will be like on those days and how this will affect filming the video. Thankfully, I won't be filming the video outside when rain is predicted to fall.

Costume Design

Here is the costume design for the main characters in my music video for ADDAL's track 'I See Fire ft. Jasmine Thompson'. These characters are the young girl and the demons that try to draw her deeper into the woods. I designed these characters on GlamStorm and added extra features that I needed on Pages, for example the tights, shoes and masquerade masks.

Asset List

Here is the Asset list for the video for ADDAL's track 'I See Fire ft. Jasmine Thompson'. I have gathered the items that will be needed in order to construct the music video. They will help in the production of the music video and I have explained for each item how they will do this.

Digipak Ideas

These are a couple of the ideas for a Digipak for ADDAL. I think that they flow with the rest of his image and how he would like to come across. These ideas aren't finalised yet but I like the idea of them. The Digipak's both feature a beautiful girl on the front cover, which is often a theme in ADDAL's artwork.

Timeline

This is the timeline I have constructed featuring the lyrics from ADDAL's song 'I See Fire ft. Jasmine Thompson'. The timeline shows the different parts to the song including choruses and verses, with lyrics where they fit.

Test Footage

Here is a collection of the test footage I shot for my music video for ADDAL's track 'I See Fire ft Jasmine Thompson'. I have gathered the test footage I managed to film. The footage shows the composition I'd like to use it my final music video. It also showed the lighting and filter's I'd like to use. I hope this video showcases my ideas about how I'd like to shoot my final music video.

Animatic

Here is the animatic constructing the images from the storyboard I made. It is played with the soundtrack of ADDAL's track 'I See Fire ft. Jasmine Thompson'. The animatic is constructed so that I know that I have enough shots to fill the track I have chosen. In my case, I have an instrumental section at the ends which I have filled in with shots but these will only be re-enforcing the messages I have put across in my previous shots.

Storyboard

This is the storyboard for my music video. I have 33 shots in which I have described what would happen in each and the lighting for them. I want each of the reality's, the heaven and the hospital, to have different lighting and then change to show how the girl has changed her perspective on life.

Jump Cut Footage (Advanced Camerawork)

Here is the footage Tierney and I made using jump cut techniques which showcase advanced camera work. Below, is the Tierney showcasing jump cuts on the stairs in the library. We filmed on my phone and used the software Splice to edit the clips together. The second clip we did was the disappear shot where Tierney filmed me to create the illusion that I could disappear. Again, we used the software Splice on my phone to edit the shots. The third and final jump cut technique we used was showcasing Tierney walking to one area and appearing at the next, again, this  was filmed on the stairs located in the library.

Website Draft

Here is the draft for the website that I have created for ADDAL:

http://addalmusic.weebly.com/

I wanted to stick with the simplistic style that ADDAL has stuck with for his profiles because I want ADDAL's image to be simplistic and modern. The html isn't a proper address as this would mean paying for the address. So that meant signing up for a free website design. I used a similar font to what ADDAL has used on his profiles and artwork. Soon I will hope to advertise his SoundCloud and YouTube profile in order to advertise his music.

Casting Photos

Name: Lilly Jordan
Age: 17
Height: 5ft 6
School: The Leigh Academy

I have casted Lilly Jordan, an actress from the Leigh Academy Yr 13 Drama class, to play the lead role as the young girl. Lilly has played a number of roles including Juliet in 'Romeo and Juliet', Nora in 'A Dolls House', Blanche is 'A Streetcar Named Desire', which is why should be great to play the role of the young girl as she has experience with playing demanding roles. I also know that because she is an actress she won't be unprofessional and I know that the work for my music video will be done quickly and done well. Also, because Lilly is a teenager herself, she will able to relate to the stress and emotions that teenagers and young adults have to face in everyday life. I know that Lilly would be able to convey the theme of music video, depression, with sensitivity as she knows that it a serious topic.

Video Pitch

Email from Artist

My artist ADDAL, is signed to Unity Group Talent Agency. On his SoundCloud profile the email shown to get in contact with is edouard@unitygroup.fr, who is the CEO of Unity Group. He gave me the permission to use ADDAL's song. He has even asked if there is anything they need from their side. I am really happy that ADDAL is signed to this Talent Agency as they even create music videos, in which I can get inspiration and camera techniques from. I would like to get permission to create a website for ADDAL because so far he hasn't got a website, just a Facebook, SoundCloud and Instagram profile.

Artist's Image & Genre

Above top, is a collection of the artwork that is with his songs released onto his SoundCloud profile. His image is modern with the style simplistic to match his music. The artworks all include girls as the image. This give me a format to work with when I create a DigiPak for his track 'I See Fire ft Jasmine Thompson'. I also gives me the idea that a girl would definitely feature in the music video. Above bottom, is ADDAL's Instagram profile, in which he posts the artwork of his track releases on SoundCloud. He gets feedback from what people think of the tracks with likes and comments. He has linked his Facebook profile so that people who are interested in his music can get in contact with him. This is a good example of advertising because it gets him out there.

The Talent agency he is signed to is called 'Unity Group'. They advertise his Facebook page and if someone wanted to book him they would book him through them. Another management that ADDAL seems to be signed to is FP Artists, who are focused on scouting, booking, management and organisation of events. They advertise his latest tracks on SoundCloud and his Instagram profile.

This image was found on FP Artists page for ADDAL. It seems like this could be an image of ADDAL, however this in hard to tell because there is no evidence to suggest this. ADDAL seems like an artist who covers his identity and rather lets his music speak for him, like most DJs, which I think he fits into more. This means that my music video would be ideal because it means that his identity isn't shown and his music is telling a story. His music is described as 'emotional' music which fits in which my idea for a music video because the sensitive topic of depression can be emotional.

Genre - Indie Pop

I think that ADDAL's music can be defined as Indie-Pop because he takes alternative music and makes them more mainstream to viewers by adding beats and instrumentals. Indie Pop is defined as a genre of alternative rock. This means that his music is less melancholic than alternative rock and more upbeat. However, in my music video I am making the message more alternative rock because I want ADDAL's music to connect with people emotionally.

Video Pitch Script

Hello, the song I've decided to create a music video with is the 'I See Fire' remix by ADDAL that he mixed from Jasmine Thompson's cover of Ed Sheeran's song 'I See Fire'.

The plot of the video is a girl who has just woken up from an incident. She is in hospital and she passes into the after-life and she had to decide whether her life is good enough to carry on or whether she should go to heaven. I got inspiration from the recent release of the film 'If I Stay', because Chloe Grace Moretz's character also has to decide whether she should stay or not.

The main theme of the video is depression because the girl has to decide whether her life is worth carrying on with. I chose the theme of depression because many young adults face depression everyday. One in five children and adolescents is affected by mental health problems and disorders. Those aged 18-24 have the highest prevalence of mental disorders of any age group. This is why depression should be taken seriously and I would like to bring awareness to this in my music video.

The young girl's attempted death will be hinted as a suicide due to her depression, however the act will not be played out as it is a very sensitive topic to be considered carefully. The music video will look at the affect that will play out rather than the cause.

The video will play out two realities, one where the location is real-life, and the other where she is imagining herself in the heaven she dreamed of. The realities will match the song I chose with real-life being the lyrics, and her heaven being instrumental.

Her real-life will include close-ups and intimate shots because it is reality and the topic of depression should be taken seriously. She will wake up sitting in the hospital bed in a hospital gown. Her eyes will look drained and have dark circles. The filter of the location will be very saturated to show the darkness that she has gone through. I would like to do a shot of her head underwater in a bath as close-up, this could draw on the topic I want to focus on, and give something emotional for the audience to watch.

Her dream will include wide shots of landscapes and harsh lighting to show the hyper-reality of her dream. It will includes shots of nature, for example, there will be shots of flower fields and woods. There will be panning shots and lots of lens flares. I hope to include hyper-reality into my music video to show that the heaven isn't reality. I will do this by include odd characters in the dream. For example, if there were people dressed in black with masks on, then you would know that isn't reality because that doesn't happen in real-life

The beginning of the video will be real-life as she is comatose but wakes up in the after-life. Which leads her to move onto her heaven that she dreamed of.

The middle of the video will switch between reality and her heaven.

Her conflict in her choice in whether she should stay in heaven or go back to reality. She has to decide whether her life is good enough in reality to continue with. There will be different flash-backs, one of her attempted death when she is in a bath and one of when she is with her friends around a bonfire.

The end will be the deciding factor of whether she passes to heaven or stays in reality. I want my music video to be a motivation to those with depression, so I want the ending to be a positive resolution. This would mean that she choses to stay in reality and the end of video ends with her waking up finally.

Lyrics

'I See Fire' - cover by Jasmine Thompson, remix by ADDAL

0.00-
Oh, misty eye of the mountain below
Keep careful watch of my brothers' souls
And should the sky be filled with fire and smoke
Keep watching over Durin's son

0.34-
INSTRUMENTAL

1.08-
If this is to end in fire
Then we should all burn together
Watch the flames climb high into the night
Calling out father, stand by and we will
Watch the flames burn auburn on the mountain side

1.27-
INSTRUMENTAL

1.43-
And if we should die tonight
Then we should all die together
Raise a glass of wine for the last time
Calling out father, prepare as we will
Watch the flames burn auburn on the mountain side
Desolation comes upon the sky

2.06-
Now I see fire, inside the mountain
I see fire, burning the trees
And I see fire, hollowing souls
I see fire, blood in the breeze
And I hope that you'll remember me

2.27-
I will cover my eyes
For if the dark returns then
My brothers will die
And as the sky's falling down
It crashed into this lonely town
And with that shadow upon the ground
I hear my people screaming out

2.43-
Now I see fire, inside the mountain
I see fire, burning the trees
I see fire, hollowing souls
I see fire, blood in the breeze

Target Audience

ADDAL's SoundCloud profile:

" 'Emotional music' this is the concept behind Addal.
Born to satisfy the human needs of emotions, passion and feelings.
It’s the pure essence of love turned into music."

'Emotional music' could appeal to young teenagers who can relate to the plot of the music video.

Song Feedback

Here is an example of some of the comments made on the video ADDAL posted of this song on YouTube:

The audience express that they like the remix but think that the beat is too fast. Hopefully by addressing the target audience with my ideas for the video that it will change their mind and bring in a wider audience for my artist. Visuals in my music video can help to address the problems of a fast beat.

Here is an example of some of the comments made on Facebook about ADDAL's remix of 'I See Fire':

The comments are even more positive and it's clear to see the age group is between 16-mid 20s.

Audience
I want to appeal to people aged 16-mid 20s because this is the age group which are listening to ADDAL's music. Ideally, I would like the video to appeal to the Hipster subculture, as this is the type of audience ADDAL's music is appealing to. Since the song is a re-mix, I will need to steer it away from the original song's video because this will differentiate the artists work as his own.

I think that they would relate to what the teenagers in my music video will go through as the song can be seen as quite emotional. The lyrics say "If this is to end in fire, then we should all burn together", this can be quite motivational because it's saying that they're stick with each other through everything. However, it can also be seen as quite depressing because they will do anything for each other, even die. If my video discussed depression then I would be relating to young adults who suffer from depression regularly.

The audience that listens to ADDAL's music can fit into the hipster subculture because many appeal to his modern and fashionable look. His music brings in a more modern take of a hipster. Typically they would be aged 18-24 and dress according to fashion trends. They aren't alternative but listen to music that have an upbeat. Just like ADDAL's music they aren't completely alternative as they are a mainstream audience as well. On the right here is Jaden and Willow Smith, who are starting a new era of modern hipsters who have started to wear alternative modern clothing that derives from mainstream clothing. This is what I can imagine ADDAL's audience to look like, modern but alternative.

MUSIC VIDEOS

This music video from S. Carey shows many nature shots that I would like. For example, the shots of the woods would be good to include. The shots of the campfire would be good to include as this is taking a literal shot of 'I See Fire'. I like the wide camera shots and the symmetrical shots. I also like the time-lapse shots, however Id have to think of how I'd re-create that.

I like the beginning of this video of the shot of the landscape. I'd like to include this in my music video, however it would be later when the girl realises she's waken up in her heaven. I like the nature shots through the woods, which I would like to include in my music video.

I would like my music video to have a similar beginning, as she will wake up in a hospital bed after an accident and then go back to dreaming of a life in heaven if she dies. The shots will be natural like in this video. She will also be dreaming of her life before the accident, with her friends. I like the shots of the landscape, and I would like to include this in my music video. I also like the panning shots which I want to include in my music video.

The idea of the lyrics 'say something, I'm giving up on you' can be referred back to the idea of my music video where the girl is unresponsive to those around her and becomes involved in her own world that she dreamt.

The theme of this video is similar to the theme of the idea of my music video as it also deals with depression and whether they can carry on living. However, this video is more about abusive relationships and how sufferers still want to go back to their abusive partners. The beginning monologue is very important in expressing the topic is a serious way because it brings awareness to the public about abusive relationships. "It's like you're screaming and no one can hear. You almost feel ashamed that someone could be that important that without them you feel like nothing. No one will ever understand how much it hurts. You feel hopeless, like nothing can save you. And when it's over and it's gone, you almost wish that you could have all that bad stuff back. So that you could have the good." -THUNDER-

Rihanna and the partner are featured in the bath, struggle to contemplate their problems. Tis links back to the idea I want to do for my music video, as I also want the young girl's struggle to intensify when she flashes back to her attempted death in the bath. Like this video I want there to be distorted images when there is darkness in the girl's mind, because this shows the troubles in her mind that made her think of ending her life in the first place.

Sinéad O'Connor and her music video 'Nothing Compares 2U' has inspired modern artists to today in their music video to keep it simplistic. For example, Lorde in her music video 'Tennis Court' is her sing behind a black background like Sinéad O'Connor. Miley Cyrus's video 'Wrecking Ball' was inspired by including close-ups of her face crying to show the intensity of her emotions. This is similar to what 'd like to do for my video with the young girl. She will have her eyes open and then she goes into a comatose state which leads to the heaven she dreamt off.

FILMS

Even though this is a comedy, it has the similar concepts to my music video idea in that it says that you should stick together and stay together, similar to the lyrics in the song 'I See Fire', 'If this is to end in fire, then we should all burn together'. My music video won't be comedic as it is about a girl passing into the afterlife and thinking about whether she should go back or not.

The end of this film 'Click' with Adam Sandler in it, ends with him walking out of the hospital he rested in. He then dies after saying goodbye to his family. I have took inspiration from this film because at the end of my music video, the young girl walks out of the hospital and walks distances to sit in a field, which is where the music video ends. The story tells us that even though it isn't the same as her heaven she dreamt of, she can still enjoy the little things. She wants her new memories to be good ones.

This film, 'The Fault in Our Stars' tells the story of how two teenagers fall in love even tough the other is dying. This is similar to what I want to do in my music video but with the romance. My music video will be about a girl having to make tough decisions. This film has a similar concept because she has to make the decision whether to end the relationship because she doesn't want to get too close to him because she knows she's going to die soon.

My music video will be very similar to this film because it has similar concepts but excludes the romance. The girl in my music video will question whether she should stay and live, or go to heaven. She passes into the after-life just like the girl in 'If I Stay'. She flashes back from the after-life and real-life as the chorus changes between verses and instrumental music.

This film with Colin Firth called 'A Single Man', shows of how he has to deal with depression after surviving a car crash. Although I cannot re-create a car crash, I will skip forward to when the girl in my music video is in hospital. She will also struggle with depression because she won't know whats better, real-life or the after-life. She has to decide whether her life is worth living. The lyrics in 'I See Fire' is persuading her to stay in real-life, because this motivates people in real-life with depression to continue living.

I like the idea of this film with Robin Williams which inspires ideas for my music video. The film 'What Dreams May Come' shows this scene when he passes into the heaven that he created himself. It is a world made from a painting, and as he touches things such as the flower, it turns to blue paint in his hand. I'd like this sense of hyper-reality in my music video, however I haven't thought yet of how to integrate this.

How do you rebrand a shy guitarist as a solo artist?

Oasis - Don't Look Back in Anger

• Authentic
• Nonchalent
• Manor House - rock and roll, heterosexual
• Popular -girls, voyerism
• British - taxi, John Lennon, Hackney
• Intertexual references

Noel Ghallagher - Death of You and Me

What characters have we got?

• Noel as a star in text, writing lyrics, influences character, white shirt (pure), sunglassss (hiding himself), priest type character, religious figure

Theme:
• Western America
• Americana

How has this concept been developed?

Noel Ghallager - What A Life

Meaning:

• Fire - hell
• Devil - dark, persuasive, makes her look small, comical (Russel Brand), pervy, liar, evil British, trying to corrupt her soul
• Waitress - heart racing, resisting

Star in Text:

• Russel Brand - drugs, temptation, alcohol, top hat (child catcher)
• Noel gets a ride with the devils helpers, takes a picture of them and 'sucks their soul', saves the waitress's soul, don't want to brand him as a British villain, God

Voyerism:

• Devils helpers flash down a car - close up of leg, steals car, picks up Noel
• Takes pictures of the devils helpers in bikinis

Intertextuality:

• Devil - Heaven Vs Hell, what's right and what's wrong
• Flipped - anti-Christ
• Owl - pure, showing she's still deep, occultic symbol, the dark side
• Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - child catchers top hat

Music Video Comparison

This video that I found would be similar to a video concept that our group would like to do. Like our video concept, this video is outside and features lyrical indie music. The video is set outside in the woods which would be another idea to set our music video in. Like our song choice, this song enabled the creators of this video to be creative.
