Target Audience

ADDAL's SoundCloud profile:

" 'Emotional music' this is the concept behind Addal.
Born to satisfy the human needs of emotions, passion and feelings.
It’s the pure essence of love turned into music."

'Emotional music' could appeal to young teenagers who can relate to the plot of the music video.

Song Feedback

Here is an example of some of the comments made on the video ADDAL posted of this song on YouTube:

The audience express that they like the remix but think that the beat is too fast. Hopefully by addressing the target audience with my ideas for the video that it will change their mind and bring in a wider audience for my artist. Visuals in my music video can help to address the problems of a fast beat.

Here is an example of some of the comments made on Facebook about ADDAL's remix of 'I See Fire':

The comments are even more positive and it's clear to see the age group is between 16-mid 20s.

Audience
I want to appeal to people aged 16-mid 20s because this is the age group which are listening to ADDAL's music. Ideally, I would like the video to appeal to the Hipster subculture, as this is the type of audience ADDAL's music is appealing to. Since the song is a re-mix, I will need to steer it away from the original song's video because this will differentiate the artists work as his own.

I think that they would relate to what the teenagers in my music video will go through as the song can be seen as quite emotional. The lyrics say "If this is to end in fire, then we should all burn together", this can be quite motivational because it's saying that they're stick with each other through everything. However, it can also be seen as quite depressing because they will do anything for each other, even die. If my video discussed depression then I would be relating to young adults who suffer from depression regularly.

The audience that listens to ADDAL's music can fit into the hipster subculture because many appeal to his modern and fashionable look. His music brings in a more modern take of a hipster. Typically they would be aged 18-24 and dress according to fashion trends. They aren't alternative but listen to music that have an upbeat. Just like ADDAL's music they aren't completely alternative as they are a mainstream audience as well. On the right here is Jaden and Willow Smith, who are starting a new era of modern hipsters who have started to wear alternative modern clothing that derives from mainstream clothing. This is what I can imagine ADDAL's audience to look like, modern but alternative.

MUSIC VIDEOS

This music video from S. Carey shows many nature shots that I would like. For example, the shots of the woods would be good to include. The shots of the campfire would be good to include as this is taking a literal shot of 'I See Fire'. I like the wide camera shots and the symmetrical shots. I also like the time-lapse shots, however Id have to think of how I'd re-create that.

I like the beginning of this video of the shot of the landscape. I'd like to include this in my music video, however it would be later when the girl realises she's waken up in her heaven. I like the nature shots through the woods, which I would like to include in my music video.

I would like my music video to have a similar beginning, as she will wake up in a hospital bed after an accident and then go back to dreaming of a life in heaven if she dies. The shots will be natural like in this video. She will also be dreaming of her life before the accident, with her friends. I like the shots of the landscape, and I would like to include this in my music video. I also like the panning shots which I want to include in my music video.

The idea of the lyrics 'say something, I'm giving up on you' can be referred back to the idea of my music video where the girl is unresponsive to those around her and becomes involved in her own world that she dreamt.

The theme of this video is similar to the theme of the idea of my music video as it also deals with depression and whether they can carry on living. However, this video is more about abusive relationships and how sufferers still want to go back to their abusive partners. The beginning monologue is very important in expressing the topic is a serious way because it brings awareness to the public about abusive relationships. "It's like you're screaming and no one can hear. You almost feel ashamed that someone could be that important that without them you feel like nothing. No one will ever understand how much it hurts. You feel hopeless, like nothing can save you. And when it's over and it's gone, you almost wish that you could have all that bad stuff back. So that you could have the good." -THUNDER-

Rihanna and the partner are featured in the bath, struggle to contemplate their problems. Tis links back to the idea I want to do for my music video, as I also want the young girl's struggle to intensify when she flashes back to her attempted death in the bath. Like this video I want there to be distorted images when there is darkness in the girl's mind, because this shows the troubles in her mind that made her think of ending her life in the first place.

Sinéad O'Connor and her music video 'Nothing Compares 2U' has inspired modern artists to today in their music video to keep it simplistic. For example, Lorde in her music video 'Tennis Court' is her sing behind a black background like Sinéad O'Connor. Miley Cyrus's video 'Wrecking Ball' was inspired by including close-ups of her face crying to show the intensity of her emotions. This is similar to what 'd like to do for my video with the young girl. She will have her eyes open and then she goes into a comatose state which leads to the heaven she dreamt off.

FILMS

Even though this is a comedy, it has the similar concepts to my music video idea in that it says that you should stick together and stay together, similar to the lyrics in the song 'I See Fire', 'If this is to end in fire, then we should all burn together'. My music video won't be comedic as it is about a girl passing into the afterlife and thinking about whether she should go back or not.

The end of this film 'Click' with Adam Sandler in it, ends with him walking out of the hospital he rested in. He then dies after saying goodbye to his family. I have took inspiration from this film because at the end of my music video, the young girl walks out of the hospital and walks distances to sit in a field, which is where the music video ends. The story tells us that even though it isn't the same as her heaven she dreamt of, she can still enjoy the little things. She wants her new memories to be good ones.

This film, 'The Fault in Our Stars' tells the story of how two teenagers fall in love even tough the other is dying. This is similar to what I want to do in my music video but with the romance. My music video will be about a girl having to make tough decisions. This film has a similar concept because she has to make the decision whether to end the relationship because she doesn't want to get too close to him because she knows she's going to die soon.

My music video will be very similar to this film because it has similar concepts but excludes the romance. The girl in my music video will question whether she should stay and live, or go to heaven. She passes into the after-life just like the girl in 'If I Stay'. She flashes back from the after-life and real-life as the chorus changes between verses and instrumental music.

This film with Colin Firth called 'A Single Man', shows of how he has to deal with depression after surviving a car crash. Although I cannot re-create a car crash, I will skip forward to when the girl in my music video is in hospital. She will also struggle with depression because she won't know whats better, real-life or the after-life. She has to decide whether her life is worth living. The lyrics in 'I See Fire' is persuading her to stay in real-life, because this motivates people in real-life with depression to continue living.

I like the idea of this film with Robin Williams which inspires ideas for my music video. The film 'What Dreams May Come' shows this scene when he passes into the heaven that he created himself. It is a world made from a painting, and as he touches things such as the flower, it turns to blue paint in his hand. I'd like this sense of hyper-reality in my music video, however I haven't thought yet of how to integrate this.

How do you rebrand a shy guitarist as a solo artist?

Oasis - Don't Look Back in Anger

• Authentic
• Nonchalent
• Manor House - rock and roll, heterosexual
• Popular -girls, voyerism
• British - taxi, John Lennon, Hackney
• Intertexual references

Noel Ghallagher - Death of You and Me

What characters have we got?

• Noel as a star in text, writing lyrics, influences character, white shirt (pure), sunglassss (hiding himself), priest type character, religious figure
• Public in diner
• Waitress - wants to escape, bright uniform, shouldn't be in there, Noël pushes her in pool, dominant character
• Marching band

Is there any meaning?
•"Hero Sandwhich"
• Music come to save the waitress
• Washing away her cares
• "Thoughts of going under" - suicide, not pure anymore, baptism (water)
• Christ-like pose waitress makes - target audience, American Christians, hand on heart, good person
• Yonic symbol and she walks through door
• Hell symbol and she walks through the door

Can you spot any voyerism?
• Bands sexy outfits
• Waitress comes out of pool wet, short dress, close ups of legs

Relationship to sound:
• Horse in time to beat
• "Thoughts of going under" - goes under water
• "I can feel the storm clouds sucking at my soul" - horse and cart, weird procession

Setting:
• Old American Diner - branding of the song, "last chance" on window
• Motel
• Desert

Props:
• Diner
• Pool - pushed into pool, death, re-birth, baptism image,
• Horse and cart - dark, old, vintage, villainous, threat is starting to
move into the waitresses life, rolls up as she reaches freedom, sells her soul, flirts with the devil/dark side

Theme:
• Western America
• Americana

How has this concept been developed?

Noel Ghallager - What A Life

Meaning:

• Fire - hell
• Devil - dark, persuasive, makes her look small, comical (Russel Brand), pervy, liar, evil British, trying to corrupt her soul
• Waitress - heart racing, resisting
• "Soulsucker" on camera
• Flipped - flipping her life around

Star in Text:

• Russel Brand - drugs, temptation, alcohol, top hat (child catcher)
• Noel gets a ride with the devils helpers, takes a picture of them and 'sucks their soul', saves the waitress's soul, don't want to brand him as a British villain, God

Voyerism:

• Devils helpers flash down a car - close up of leg, steals car, picks up Noel
• Takes pictures of the devils helpers in bikinis

Intertextuality:

• Devil - Heaven Vs Hell, what's right and what's wrong
• Flipped - anti-Christ
• Owl - pure, showing she's still deep, occultic symbol, the dark side
• Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - child catchers top hat

Noel Then Vs Now:

• The song is his last chance to make an album, getting older
• Americana Vs Britannia

Music Video Comparison

This video that I found would be similar to a video concept that our group would like to do. Like our video concept, this video is outside and features lyrical indie music. The video is set outside in the woods which would be another idea to set our music video in. Like our song choice, this song enabled the creators of this video to be creative.
